Documentaries Play an Educational Role in the Sustainable Development Goals

May 26, 2017

In 2015, more than 190 world leaders committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) to help us work toward a more compassionate, equitable, and sustainable world.

Each documentary featured on Films for the Planet touches on one or more of the 17 Goals. We highlight films aligned with the SDG’s and offer educational resources to complement these films as a means for deeper learning about global challenges and opportunities.

Educators interested in providing relevant information about the SDG’s, can access Films for the Planet’s documentaries along with the Microsoft Learning’s course which has been designed to support the teaching of the World’s Largest Lesson and all other efforts to educate and engage children and young people so that they support the Sustainable Development Goals and want to turn their support into action.

Governments, businesses and civil society along with the United Nations have started to mobilize efforts to achieve the Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030. A recent report concludes that meeting the goals in just four out of 60 sectors (food and agriculture, cities, energy and materials, and health and well-being) could indeed open up market opportunities worth up to $12 trillion a year in less than 15 years.

Education is key for unlocking these new economies on behalf of cities, people and planet. Of these goals, SDG-11, is about making cities “inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” A recent report from United Cities and Local Governments breaks down, goal-by-goal, where the SDGs intersect with the work of local governments. Each of the 17 goals contains targets – 169 total, 90 of which are relevant to local governments. Targets that have roles for cities are listed here.
