Frequently Asked Questions

As a project of the Compathos Foundation 501(c)3, Films for the Planet is dedicated to using the power of film to inspire positive social and environmental change. Our mission is to raise awareness and spark action around the most challeging issues facing our planet today, from climate change and biodiversity loss to social justice and human rights.

We do this by amplifing the work of social change artists and independent filmmakers who are working in the philanthropic, environmental and social impact sectors and by creating educational programs and events for individuals, communities and non-profit networks worldwide. We’ve seen film inspire awareness and ignite social movements time and again – we know amazing things are possible!

Together, we are ushering in a revolutionary era of digital cinema that hands the story over to audiences that will determine the outcomes of some of the most pressing issues of our time.

What equipment is needed to watch a movie from my computer on a TV?

To watch a movie from your computer on a TV, you’ll need some equipment and the right connections. Here’s what you need:

1. HDMI Cable: If your laptop has an HDMI port on it, you don’t need any special adapters or equipment.  The most common and straightforward way to connect is using an HDMI cable. Most modern laptops and TVs have HDMI ports that provide high-quality audio and video transmission. Simply plug one end of the HDMI cable into your laptop’s HDMI port and the other end into your TV’s HDMI port.

2. Matching Ports: Ensure that both your laptop and TV have matching HDMI ports. This is important for a seamless connection.

3. Wireless Adapter: If you prefer a wireless connection, consider a Miracast device. It allows you to mirror your computer screen on your TV without cables.

4. DVI or VGA Cable (Alternative): If your laptop and TV lack HDMI ports but have DVI or VGA ports, you can use a DVI or VGA cable along with an audio cable for sound. Note that these options may provide lower video and audio quality compared to HDMI. You may need an adapter to convert the signal to HDMI.

5. TV Remote: You might need your TV remote to switch to the correct input source (HDMI) once everything is connected.

7. Audio Cable: If your video connection (HDMI, DVI, or VGA) doesn’t carry audio, you’ll need a separate audio cable (like a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA) to connect your computer’s audio output to the TV’s audio input.

6. Computer with the Movie: Of course, you need a computer with the movie you want to watch.

Remember to consult your laptop’s and TV’s user manuals for specific instructions on connecting and configuring the display settings.

How do I watch Vimeo on Demand films on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast?

In 2016, Vimeo launched Apple TV, Android TV, and Roku apps to bring the best of Vimeo to your big screen. Today, Vimeo is much more than a viewing destination. It’s an all-in-one video experience platform giving creative professionals, businesses, and organizations everything they need to make and market amazing, impactful videos. As of June 27, 2023, Vimeo is ending support for their existing TV apps.

How can I still watch Vimeo videos on my TV?

You can continue to watch Vimeo videos on your TV by using their free iOS and Android apps or by using a supported browser. You can use these apps to cast via Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast to your television.

Why is Vimeo ending support for the TV apps?

Vimeo strives to provide users with a best-in-class playback and live streaming experience that’s optimized across devices, geographies, bandwidth, and network performance. They believe that  users looking to view Vimeo videos will receive a better ongoing experience by casting via their mobile app, enabling customers to enjoy Vimeo content on their TV.

Why aren't the films free?

We regret that we cannot offer all free feature–length movies on our site. The licensing and hosting bandwidth required to do so is not affordable, so we work through third party hosting platforms such as Vimeo.

It is up to the filmmaker to decide how to market and distribute their film, some offer them for free online, but most high-quality films cannot afford to do so. As filmmakers we are keenly aware of the expense that goes into making and marketing independent films. In addition, not all indie filmmakers can afford to promote their films or create take action or educational campaigns. We take pride in filling in the gaps through our content and events when given the opportunity to do so.

Like many indie filmmakers, we depend on crowdfunding or donations to be able to produce our online film events and hope that with your support, we can continue to do so for free as long as possible. Click HERE to Donate

How does Films for the Planet benefit filmmakers?

Films for the Planet’s unique approach offers a multitude of benefits to filmmakers, particularly those producing content centered around environmental and social themes. Here are some of the ways filmmakers can benefit:

Affiliate Revenue
By focusing our curation efforts on Vimeo On Demand, we ensure that filmmakers receive a generous 90% revenue share from their pay-per-view fees. This focus allows us to offer competitive financial returns to creators who choose to be part of our platform.

Sponsorship Programs
Our sponsorship program is aimed at brands that wish to align themselves with impactful storytelling. A portion of the sponsorship funds can be allocated directly to the filmmakers, creating an additional revenue stream that supports the sustainability of their projects.

Fiscal Sponsorship Opportunities
Our fiscal sponsorship program expands your fundraising options, especially when grants and donations are restricted to 501(c)(3) organizations. This not only provides a way for filmmakers to generate more revenue but also adds credibility to their projects by associating them with a recognized non-profit entity.

Student Media Internship Program
For burgeoning filmmakers or students in media-related fields, our Student Media Internship Program provides invaluable hands-on experience. Interns work on a variety of functions—from planning and project management to social media marketing and research—all while contributing to films and media projects that aim to make a social impact.

Increased Exposure

Curated Content: Being part of a curated collection increases the credibility and visibility of a filmmaker’s work.

Event-Based Showcasing: Our virtual film events, premieres, and special programming put the spotlight on individual films, leading to greater recognition and potentially, a broader audience.

Multi-Platform Reference: Even if a film is available on another streaming platform, we direct our audience to it, thereby expanding the film’s reach.

Educational & Community Engagement

Filmmaker Interviews & Panels: Filmmakers share the inspiration and information behind their work, enhancing audience engagement.

Resources & Learning: By providing educational resources related to the films, we help filmmakers in achieving their objective of educating the public on specific issues.

Industry Contacts: Through real-time events that tap into an extensive network of renowned filmmakers, narrative catalysts, and subject-matter experts, filmmakers can expand their industry connections.

Brand Partnerships: Our tailored partnerships for brands can be an attractive proposition for filmmakers who are looking to align their work with brands that share similar values.

Social Impact & Activism

Vetted Organizations: Filmmakers can rest assured that their work is contributing to a cause, as we offer ways to give to vetted organizations that align with the film’s themes.

Meaningful Engagement: Our platform’s emphasis on sparking social impact and community involvement makes each film more than just a viewing experience—it becomes a catalyst for action.

Marketing and Promotion

Tailored Campaigns: Flmmakers can benefit from tailored marketing campaigns that resonate with environmentally-conscious consumers and businesses.

Does Films for the Planet receive any money from on demand viewer fees?

No. As a nonprofit, we do not profit from showcasing these films, but act in a promotional capacity connecting people to films that will assist them in their journey as catalysts for positive change.

We originally partnered with Vimeo on a new program (2016) called “Vimeo Publisher Platform” which would give the publisher 10% and filmmaker 90% of the viewer fee.  Unfortunately, Vimeo dropped the program after we got the digital storefront up and running.  We prefer the Vimeo user interface and decided to keep our selections without receiving a percentage of the viewer fee. Ninety percent still goes to the filmmaker which aligns with our nonprofit mission of supporting philanthropy through the arts and film.
